Calvary Baptist Church was organized on April 21, 1962, as twenty-two individuals presented themselves as charter members.  Six more individuals joined in the following six weeks, as the charter was left open.  The charter closed with twenty-eight members.  Pastor Millard Mitchell was called as the founding pastor.

The church met at the corner of 31st Street and 2nd Avenue in Nitro until 1970, when it moved to 424 Cross Lanes Drive, also in Nitro.  In the fall of 1979, Calvary Baptist Academy opened with an enrollment of twenty-two students.  On April 2, 1981, ground was broken for the present school facility at 3655 Teays Valley Road in Hurricane.  Ronald Radford guided the school until his death in 1990.  Milton Thompson became principal after Brother Radford's death and has continued to lead the school to the present.  CBA now has an enrollment of approximately 170 students.

In 1993, the church moved to the present location on the same property as the school.  Pastor Mitchell led the congregation until his retirement in 2002.  Pastor Pete Thompson was called as the second senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in 2002, after serving as youth pastor since 1988.  Mark Pyles began his ministry as Senior Pastor in August of 2006 and concluded in June of 2009.  In January of 2010, Jeff Hurst became the Lead Pastor.  Jeff has been with Calvary Baptist Church & Academy since 2002.
